Flexi Extendable Lead
This is my lead of choice for Bailie Dug. I’ve had it for about 2 years and using it around six times a day, its been a good investment. Bailie wears a harness and this lead works well with it ensuring he isn’t pulling too much like he may do on short lead. It really comes into play in parks or areas where you want your dog to run around a bit but you don’t want to let them off the lead.
The good thing about the lead is you can either release it and allow it to extend up to its full length (around 5 metres) or you can lock it into a specific shorter length to make it similar to a normal lead (if you are near a road etc). When its allowed to extend it doesn’t slacken as Bailie will be moving keeping the tension. If Bailie walks toward me (or he stops and I keep walking) the lead retracts.
It’s not all easy peasy though. You need to be aware that you aren’t in as much control as you would be if you are using a normal lead. You have to always keep an eye on things in case your dog suddenly pulls in the opposite direction or there is a bike/a jogger coming toward you to ensure you don’t take someone out. It’s also easy to get tangled up yourself or tangled with another dog. Also watch out for dogs running toward the lead. WATCH OUT FOR YOURSELF!
Due to its design, its easy for you to get a hand / finger injury if you aren’t paying attention. So beware that sudden or extreme movements can mean a nasty injury. Worst case would be if you were talking to someone then your dog suddenly runs behind you. I’ve never been injured by it but there have been some close ones! Just be careful if you buy one. The lead is suitable for dogs up to 15Kg and it costs between £15-£18.
