Dogs in Hot Cars
Never leave your dog alone in a car especially on a hot day. If you have sat yourself in a parked car on a sunny day you will know how quickly it can become unbearable even with the windows all the way down and the sunroof open. Even if you leave your dog in the car for a short while with the window slightly open you are still risking your dogs life. According to the RSPCA if its 22°C/72°F outside, the temperature inside a car can soar to 47°C/117°F within 60 minutes. Of course dugs aren’t anything like humans and they find it a lot more difficult to cool down. They cool down by panting but in a hot stuffy car that’s extremely difficult which could lead to heatstroke and can be fatal.
The RSPCA receive around 6,000 calls per year from members of the public concerned about an animal that has been left in a car on the street, supermarket car park or at a public event. If you see a dog in a car on a hot day and are unable to find the owner, the RSPCA advice is to call the Police for assistance on 999. If the police attend they are likely to break in the window and remove the dog from the car. Note that the owner can also be prosecuted for Animal Cruelty. Leave your dog in the house if you are going somewhere like a Supermarket or an event where you can’t take your dog in. Don’t risk your dogs life.
